Les Miserables |
Set in 19th century France, Les Miserables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a man who is sent to prison for 19 years for the simple crime of stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean breaks his parole and starts a "new life" with a "new name", free from crime and prison. He works his way up through society and becomes mayor of a small town. Meanwhile, Valjean is being hunted down by Javert, the policeman who has made his capture a lifelong obsession.
Les Miserables is currently the
world's longest running musical, seen by over 50 million people in
38 countries and in 21 languages. From its celebrated opening in
London in October 1985, this adaptation of Victor Hugo's epic
humanitarian masterpiece, immediately captured the imagination and
enthusiasm of the theatre-going public.
This multi-award winner was written by Boublil, Schonberg and Kretzmer;
and directed by Trevor Nunn.
